The Responder
is a multi-purpose vehicle that
allows its flexible use in a
multitude of tasks that are
faced by today’s rural fire
service. It is a response
vehicle that minimizes the
vehicular space used for fire
suppression and maximizes the
space for the tools commonly
carried and yet still provides
pump and optional foam
capabilities for when its
needed. All of today’s fire
departments want a pumper with
lots of compartment space, low
crosslays, be readily
serviceable, and still be
maneuverable and flexible. These
needs have created a paradox of
larger compartments versus
smaller vehicle packaging, which
forces rural apparatus
committees with limited
resources to compromise on some
items in order to meet other
needs. The new Responder,
however, capitalizes on Pierce’s
single source philosophy by
integrating the fire suppression
package into the overall
vehicle. This concept has such a
big impact on the vehicle that
it produces more than adequate
compartment space, provides up
to 1250 gallons of water, places
the crosslays at a safe and
ergonomically chest height, and
packages it all in an economical
195” wheelbase on an extended 2
door commercial chassis.
